About Signature Learning Programmes

What is a ‘signature learning programme’?

Signature Learning Programmes are based on sectors of the economy and give students the chance to develop industry-connected capabilities alongside their academic studies. For each signature, there will be a learning programme, a range of learning opportunities, that enables students to develop the skills, knowledge and relationships to:

  • follow their passions

  • build on their talents

  • achieve their career and further education aspirations.

Signature learning opportunities include:

  • modules on relevant academic subjects

  • appropriate practical skills training

  • individual and group projects focused on real world issues and challenges

  • authentic, real world learning experiences

  • effective guidance on careers and further education

  • relevant accreditation

….. all developed in line with Bermuda’s vision for learning.

Bermuda’s first Signatures

After collaboration with hundreds of educators, parents, young people, community members and business leaders, Bermuda’s first Signature Learning Programmes have been established at Cedarbridge Academy and The Berkeley Institute. Both schools will offer two unique Signature Learning Programmes, with further programmes being developed for these and other schools to begin in September 2023. The full list of Signatures for Bermuda’s schools that have been identified through research and Government consultation with the community are:

  1. STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

  2. Climate, Environment, Agriculture and Resources

  3. Health and Social care

  4. Community and Social Investment

  5. Arts and Culture

  6. Education Services

  7. Sports and Leisure Management

  8. Financial and Insurance Services,

  9. Hospitality and Tourism,

  10. Building Construction and Maintenance: Trades and Professions

Signatures are then selected by schools based on the needs, interests and ambitions of the young people they serve as well as the needs of and future goals for Bermuda’s communities and economy.

Signature Learning Programmes in Practice

Example: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

Each Signature Learning Programme (SLP) is designed with the intended student outcomes in mind: the characteristics, strengths and core knowledge that the programme intends to develop over its course.

SLPs contain a number of learning strands which create pathways for students based on their interests, talents and career aspirations. Here you can see the five strands contained within the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths signature learning programme, and the areas of exploration each contain. These include projects, real-world community and industry experiences and entrepreneurial challenges.
